Partizan Music Video Director Michel Gondry Finds Another Mad World

Fresh off the success of his latest feature film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Michel Gondry has teamed up with Gary Jules to make the video for Mad World. The one-day shoot took place in New York City on March 14, 2004. Jules and producer Michael Andrews originally collaborated on this reinterpretation of a 1980’s hit by Tears for Fears for the soundtrack of the independent feature film Donnie Darko.

The video counterpoints the melancholy lyrics with more hopeful images of a beautiful world, or perhaps a world that’s been irrevocably lost to us. Jules walks the streets of New York on what appears to be an ordinary day. A group of jostling and playing school children surrounds him. One by one they begin to lie down forming a face with two kids’ arms creating an articulated mouth, which changes expression. They go on to create images like a bird, an airplane, a house, as well as several abstract images.
